St Helens Ditch

During the archaeological dig that took place prior to the extension of the inner ring road a ditch was found near to the  medieval site of St. Helen's. The following map sent to me by the County Archaeologist at Matlock shows the location in a dotted red line.

I transposed this to my 1610 John Speed map complete with Ordnance Survey grid lines and marked the location with a Blue line. (It's actual location may vary by a few yards but it is within acceptable limits).

It would appear from it's location, which is on a falling gradient away from St Helen's, that it may have been a drainage ditch. Certainly a ditch is recorded in this area and described in the Cartulary of Darley Abbey as 'Le Dichfelt' as shown following:-
